Oriental Orientation

Shanghai, China

The coolest thing about my first day of school was that it is likely to be my last day of school that lasts for ten hours. The intense schedule of first year is now officially behind us, and we can concentrate on finding great jobs and then really focus on being B-School “Seniors.”

The second coolest thing about the first day was that Romano Prodi, former Prime Minister of Italy and former President of the European Commission, was also there. With him were his buddies, the Vice President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and South Africa’s Consul General in Shanghai, Vika Khumalo. They presented a panel on the topic, “China, Africa, and the EU in the 21st Century.”

The U.S. was not mentioned until well into the discussion. Mr. Khumalo said, “Africa, China, and Europe. But there is a fourth leg to the table. You can love them or you can hate them, but you can’t ignore them. The United States...”

Pictures: Jerome, ECL, and our pal Romano Prodi (in the background); the IESE crew on campus (which, like the arch in St. Louis, was designed by IM Pei); Tomás, Gerald, ECL, Mike in class; the CEIBS gym; the IESE crew at the welcome party, which happened to be at a Basque-style compound
